A safe place to call home

For almost a year, a mother and her daughter searched for something many of us take for granted: a safe, stable place to call home.

Without housing stability, everything else becomes harder. Finding work. Focusing on school. Planning for the future. Instead of moving forward, each day can become consumed by one basic question: Where will we sleep tonight?

For this family, our Shelter Diversion Program helped change that.

“The assistance we received was much more than housing. It gave us long-term stability when we needed it most.”

With a stable home, this mother could begin pursuing employment after a long career gap and rebuilding her family’s future. Her daughter, who had been connected with Cincinnati Public Schools’ Project Connect, could prepare for the coming school year with greater confidence and hope for improved school attendance.

But the family’s story is about more than finding a home. It’s about what becomes possible once housing instability is no longer consuming every moment.

The mother described our coworkers who helped her navigate the process as patient, kind, respectful and encouraging. During a time when hope was difficult to find, they helped her believe that a stable future was possible.

And she saw something else firsthand: solving homelessness takes a community.

“It is an investment in people and our community. It restores the lost hope, creates invaluable opportunities, and gives vulnerable individuals and families the stability they need to move forward with confidence.”

That is why your support matters.

When our community invests in preventing homelessness and helping people regain housing stability, the impact reaches far beyond one household. A parent can pursue employment. A child can focus on school. A family can begin rebuilding.

And people who were once struggling simply to find a safe place to sleep can begin standing on their own feet and contributing to the community around them.

That is what it means to solve homelessness–not simply to provide a temporary solution, but to help create the stability from which people can build a future.

The family who shared this story has a simple hope: that others will have the same opportunity they received–to experience safety, dignity, compassion and hope during life’s most difficult moments.

And to everyone who helps make this work possible, their message is just as simple:

“Thank you for believing in us during these difficult times. Most importantly, thank you for creating opportunities that truly restore hope to rebuild our lives.”

Thank you for being part of a community that believes everyone deserves a safe place to call home–and the opportunity to build what comes next.
