National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an opportunity for all of us to remember the true meaning of giving and generosity. Those of us who have plenty, have plenty to offer the world.
This week marks the 42nd annual National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Since its inception, hundreds of thousands have participated, raising millions to help alleviate hunger and housing crises throughout the country. Positioned each year the week before Thanksgiving, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an opportunity for us to reflect on what we as a community can be grateful for, and extend that gratitude to our neighbors in need.
This year, more than 700 colleges, high schools, and community groups across the country will come together during this week to raise awareness about the pressing issues of hunger and homelessness.
Homelessness in Greater Cincinnati
Last year nearly 7,200 people in Hamilton County and 2,400 more in Northern Kentucky experienced homelessness. That’s almost 10,000 of our neighbors in need. This week, consider the following:
- One in four people experiencing homelessness are under 18*
- Over half (55%) of those experiencing homelessness are under 35*
- Last year, we saw a 20% increase in the number of people over the age of 55 who found themselves living in a shelter, or in places not meant for human habitation*
