We and our partners work year-long to help homeless families, but when school lets out family homelessness spikes.
It’s called Summer Surge and it happens across the country and here, at home. “Doubled-up” situations – where a family without housing tries to squeeze in with family or friends – become unbearable when school ends and kids are underfoot every day.
Where to sleep? Who will help these homeless families?
Many families are out of options. And they turn to our partners at Bethany House Services and Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati. But they need your help to expand their services to meet the needs of these families. Additional shelter space means an additional cost.
They need our support so that families don’t resort to living in a car or abandoned building.
Being homeless has a lasting impact on the health and well-being of children.
Homelessness has particularly adverse effects on children and youth, including:
- Hunger, poor physical and mental health, and missed educational opportunities
- Half of school age homeless children experience problems with depression and anxiety
- One in five homeless preschoolers have emotional problems that require professional care
- Homeless children are less likely to have adequate access to medical and dental care
Please consider a donation to ensure the shelter and safety of families experiencing homelessness. You can help children be in a better place this summer, and write a better story come September.
